The birthplace of country music is the city of Bristol and the birthplace of blues is Memphis (3) (4). However, ever since the 1930s, Nashville has been the primary center of the country music recording industry (5). The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum as well as the Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum are both located in Nashville (6).

Key Social Work Issues

Poverty and income-disparity is an issue in the state of Tennessee. The United States Census Bureau reports that Tennessee has a median household income of $44,140, which is lower than the national average median household income of $53,046. While Tennessee has its share of wealthy singers and horserace owners, it also has more than its share of people living on very low incomes. Over 17 percent of the state’s population is below poverty level, which is almost three percent more than the national average (14.9 percent) (7).

Substance abuse is a problem in Tennessee. According to the Tennessee Department of health, the number of drug-related deaths in the state has more than doubled between the year 2000 and 2010 (8). The number of people in the state being treated for substance abuse on an in-patient basis has also risen, going from 9,816 in 2001 to 13,422 in 2011 (9).

According to the SAMSHA, the state also has a higher-than-average percentage of the population diagnosed with mental illness (20.25 percent, compared to the national average of 18.19 percent) (10). If you would like to work as a mental health or substance abuse social worker in Tennessee, you will find that these types of social workers are in high demand.
