Updated & Fact Checked: 04.29.2025

The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects employment in the field of social work to grow 7% by 2033, 4% higher than the average growth rate of occupations. In the state of Pennsylvania, the field is protected to grow at a rate of 11%. Several factors impacting the population contribute to the increasing need for social workers in Pennsylvania.  According to the Census Bureau, 20% of Pennsylvania’s population is aged 65 or older, highlighting the importance of support for the aging population. With 20.2% of the population under the age of 18 and 39,093 children involved in child protective services in 2022, the state relies on social workers to support the child welfare system. 12% of the population lives below the poverty line, and 14.7% of the population lives with a disability. Feeding America reports that 11.9% of the population in Pennsylvania experiences food insecurity. Both are populations that social workers can aid in accessing resources such as mental health support, housing, and healthcare services.

The mental health concerns that the population of Pennsylvania is facing require support from qualified social workers.  According to the NAMI fact sheet, 39.8% of Pennsylvania adults experienced anxiety or depression symptoms in 2021. SAMSHA’s 2019 Health Barometer reports that 8.1% of adults in Pennsylvania struggle with a mental illness, an increase in prevalence over the past decade.  598,000 people with concerns were unable to access mental healthcare in 2021.  98,000 children aged 12 to 17 reported symptoms of depression, and over half of them did not receive care for their symptoms.  For social workers to best support the Pennsylvania population and their mental health concerns, a Master’s in Social Work could be a valuable asset to further expertise and skill set.

Issues Facing Social Workers

Social workers in Pennsylvania face challenges in supporting vulnerable communities, such as the homeless population, people with severe mental health concerns, and those struggling with substance use.  NAMI reports that in 2021, there were 13,375 unhoused people in Pennsylvania.  A quarter of those unhoused struggle with a serious mental illness.  In 2021, 416,000 adults experienced thoughts of suicide, and in 2020, 2,014 lives were lost to suicide in Pennsylvania.  The SAMSHA Health Barometer of 2019 reports that 66,629 people in Pennsylvania accessed substance use treatment.  23,351 people accessed Medication-Assisted Therapy (MAT) such as Methadone.  SAMSHA also reports an increase in marijuana use in people over the age of 12.  Vulnerable populations such as these require dedicated and knowledgeable social workers to assist them in navigating challenging life circumstances and the appropriate resources to support them.

Meeting the needs of these populations can put a strain on social workers practicing in Pennsylvania.  With a growing need for mental health and substance use services, high caseloads and burnout can be a challenge for social workers as they strive to create positive change for the communities they serve.  Social workers also face challenges such as limited resources, complex policies,  and systemic barriers that impede the ability to provide care to clients.

Pennsylvania Social Work Schools and MSW Programs

There are 21 graduate social work programs in Pennsylvania.  They are offered at a variety of institutions, including private universities, an Ivy League university, and public universities affiliated with the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education.  At all 21 MSW programs, GRE scores are not required for admission, although some schools may request GRE scores for applicants who have a GPA below 3.0.
